by Sophie Jordan
"With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special even among the draki—the descendants of dragons who can shift between human and dragon forms. But when Jacinda’s rebelliousness leads her family to flee into the human world, she struggles to adapt, even as her draki spirit fades. The one thing that revives it is Will, whose family hunts her kind. Jacinda can’t resist getting closer to him, even though she knows she’s risking not only her life but the draki’s most closely guarded secret." (Goodreads)
Review
Jacinda is prized in her tribe of dragon descendants for her rare ability to breathe fire. This make her feel suffocated as every move she makes, even her future, the pride tries to control. All these changes when she was forced to adapt into the human world. There, with no chance to nurture her draki, she feels it slowly withers away. With a weird twist of fate she encounters Will, a draki hunter who makes her draki spirit stir into life. With nothing else to hold on to, Jacinda will risk everything to be with the one boy she should not be with.
Firelight tossed in the mythical creatures, high school life, family dynamics, and some star-crossed lovers to create a story about a girl's journey into what it means to different, finding acceptance, and love during the most tumultuous period of a person's life - early adolescence. Complete with characters that you can either love or hate, but are definitely crucial in driving the story onto the next stage.
I really love the story because it's about dragons! Fantasy wouldn't be complete without dragons! Sophie Jordan re-imagined dragons having the capability of transforming into humans as one of their defenses against those who hunt their kind. Jacinda's journey somehow for me mirrors an adolescent's struggle in adapting to a new environment, fitting into high school, the tension in and out of the family, and of course building relationships.
I don't want to over-analyze the story but it's just some of the cool stuffs in this fiery book, Firelight. We all know that Jacinda is the dragon in the story but Will is one hot character! They build-up steam that will make readers fanning for more. Not to mention a heated love triangle that is present here. Definitely not to miss! They are not the Romeo-and-Juliet star-crossed lovers because hell they can fight and will fight their way to be together. The only question is will it be enough? With two kinds in heated conflict that spans generations - draki against hunters; and another mysterious kind looming in the shadows, will it even be possible?
Firelight will leave you captivated and on the edge by the end of the book that you'll be wanting for its sequel to come soon.

Len spends most of her time ruminating on her writings that never made it to paper; keeps sane by reading books and listening to music. She reviews most of them out of love and the joy of it.
