Happy Halloween!

I might be on hiatus but I won't forget to greet!

Happy Halloween everyone!
Have a scary, enjoyable holiday!

Photobucket

And who has the coolest Halloween costume?  Iron Man of course!

And what is Halloween without a scary story, right?  Here's a little story I shared with Reading Teen for one of their Secondhand Saturdays:

What are some of my fears?  Well, what I really don't like being in deserted bathrooms, especially those with dim lights and rows of cubicles.  Ack.  They induce bad cases of imaginary horror and based on experience it's no wonder why.

I heard this story when I was in high school because goodness, urban legends are the first thing I heard when I entered.  The school was formerly ran by a congregation of nuns, so stories are mostly about ghosts or spirits of nun haunting the school grounds.

One story in particular tells an encounter of a student who went into one of the lavatories in school.  She felt an eerie presence while inside.  Then she felt as if there was a sudden weight on her.  But she doesn't believe in the supernatural. So she dismissed the feeling as nothing more than her imagination playing tricks on her.

After some days, she still feels a bit weird.  Not to mention the shoulder ache she has been enduring since that incident in the bathroom.  She blamed the stress at school for making her all psychosomatic.

When she went to a chiropractor to have her back checked, one of the patients warily approached her and asked her to seek help with a priest.  Perplexed, she asked the old lady why would she do that.  Then the lady said, "there's a nun clinging on your back."

My ultimate dream is to have my own library in the house.  I'm willing to go all out to have my dream library and reading place.  Complete with wall-lined shelves, comfy reading couches, coffee tables and fab lighting system.  Hopefully when the plans for our new place push thru, I'll see a silver lining.  Haha!  I need to save up now!

Review: I Am Number Four

I Am Number Four
by Pittacus Lore
August 3, 2010
Buy the book:  Amazon   |   Book Depository
"Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.

Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.

I am Number Four.

I am next." (Goodreads)

Review

Are aliens the new vampires?  I hope not.  Because aliens' have a whole new hotness and mystery to them.  And I do hope that I am not influenced by the upcoming movie.  But I have to admit, and hopefully will serve as a warning to fellow Alex Pettyfer fans out there, that I was initially distracted reading the book because I can't help but see Alex as John Smith.  I think I should have read the book before the trailer came out.  But nonetheless, the book was awesome.

After a series of events, Number Four and his guardian (or Cepan), Henri were lead to a small town in Paradise, Ohio where he assumes the identity of John Smith.  He's feeling a bit weary of moving now and he hopes that they will stick longer in this place than they have in their previous places.  Especially now that he begins to realize that he can build a life here - where he finds a friend, got interested in a girl, and thinks that maybe (and hopefully) they can keep things quiet here.  But things will not go down as quiet as John would like.  He is hunted and they will stop at nothing to bring his kind down - along with everyone else who will stood in their plans.

There are a lot of terms here that you have to be familiar with as you go along.  Terms like legacies and cepan.   They will be introduced early in the book so as not to get confused.   As well as the initial back story of how number four and the rest of the Loriens came to Earth, who are hunting them, and why are we supposed to be concern in the battle.

I love the concept of the book as a true account of the Loriens.  Citing alien theories and conspiracies, and even the author, Pittacus Lore is somehow a part of all this.  The name is only a pseudonym of two authors collaborating for this book.  One of which, is a bit controversial and the other a relatively unknown.  But then again, plus points for the idea.

There is so much to write about this book but I'm afraid I might give to much away.  Part of reading this book is the mystery, the adrenaline, and the pain you have to share with Number Four.  The pain of losing so much in your life, sacrifices (to be) made, and in the end knowing that you are to fight and win not just for your survival but for the legacy of your kind.

I am not banging my head against the wall that I have to wait for the next book, The Power of Six.  Because honestly, I think the break would give me time to recover from the events in this book.  And believe me when I say the end would probably leave you needing a sort of emotional support like I did.

Waiting on Wednesday: Pegasus by Robin McKinley

by Robin McKinley
November 2, 2010
"A gorgeously-written fantasy about the friendship between a princess and her pegasus.

Because of a thousand-year-old alliance between humans and pegasi, Princess Sylviianel is ceremonially bound to Ebon, her own pegasus, on her twelfth birthday. The two species coexist peacefully, despite the language barriers separating them. Humans and pegasi both rely on specially-trained Speaker magicians as the only means of real communication.

But it’s different for Sylvi and Ebon. They can understand each other. They quickly grow close—so close that their bond becomes a threat to the status quo—and possibly to the future safety of their two nations." (Goodreads)

I'm a sucker for fantasy and Robin Mckinley is undoubtedly one of the best in the genre!

Tuesday Trailer: Zombies vs. Unicorns

Zombies vs Unicorns
Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (ed)
September 21, 2010
"It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan. This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?" (Goodreads)

Have you chosen your team?  Whose side are you on?

Review: Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

Crescendo (Hush, Hush #2)
by Becca Fitzpatrick
October 19, 2010
Buy the book:  Amazon   |   Book Depository
"Nora should have known her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described as anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away, and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.

The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch, or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?" (Goodreads)

Review

You fell in-love with Hush, Hush and now Crescendo will have you re-think everything you believe in.  Love, betrayal, and conspiracies that span across generations that put humans between fallen angels and Nephilims.

Nora and Patch's relationship is on the rocks.  The archangels are always watching -  waiting for Patch to slip-up, and Nora can't bring herself the consequences if that happens and what the future with Patch might entail.  It doesn't help when Marcie Millar gets into the picture.  Bitch always spells trouble and there's nothing that can compete with Marcie when it comes to that area.

She doesn't know if she could trust Patch anymore.  She loves him that's for sure but she feels that it will later on ruin both of them.  When events that lead her to believe that there's more to her father's murder than random mugging, she seeks answer that will destroy everything she believes in.

Patch is sexy, mysterious and smoldering as always.  Nora is verging on the end of being strong-headed and into stubbornness.  You can sometimes feel irritable towards her, but you have to hand it to her living up to having the guts.  Her best-friend, Vee provides the much needed funny antics, breaking the tension and reminds us why we all need to have a best friend.  And you will know Patch's real name here.  It's really, really cute.

Crescendo will turn your world upside-down.  Becca truly has outdone herself this time as her writing will leave you breathless and hanging on for dear life.  Just like a rollercoaster ride in Delphic, with heart-pounding twists and drops that makes you want to scream, and an ending that is a beginning of another ride itself.  I definitely and almost hollered for Becca after reading the book, and banging my head against the wall.  Either you will scream for Becca, for the third book, or probably both.  I'm starting my countdown for Tempest right now. :D

Waiting on Wednesday: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

"A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship—tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now, Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming." (Goodreads)
I'm captivated by the cover that I feel is a cross between a book cover and a movie poster.  And the plot is as enthralling as the cover.  Setting in a spaceship, a mystery, and a love story - stuffs that would really make a really good book worth the wait!  I would love to read this one so if anyone knows where there's a contest for this, buzz me! :D

Book Blogger Hop Friday (Oct 15-18)

Book Blogger Hop

It's Friday again, which means it's time for the hop.  This week's question comes from Christina of The Paperback Princess:

"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"

Ah, when this stuff happens I usually try to go as far as the mid-part of the story.  And if I still can't get into it, I move to another book and get back to it after.  By that time I think I recovered already and interested to read on again.

And it's been a while since I last joined Parajunkee's Follow Fridays!  So  I decided before I take a short leave I join in again this week. :)

And if you have time, you may want to go join Bitten By Books' Interview and Contest with Andrea Cremer going on LIVE.  You could win a copy of Nightshade, open worldwide!  GO HERE to join.

Review: Powerless by Jason Letts

The Synthesis (Powerless, #1)
by Jason Letts
May 30, 2010 (Kindle only)
copy provided by the author
"Mira Ipswich couldn't have ever known the startling difference that separates her from the rest of humanity. But when she discovers a strange anomaly in the midst of her seclusion, her parents are forced to reveal she exists in a world where everyone is imbued with a wondrous natural gift. Everyone except herself that is. Accompany Mira as her attempts to fit in among peers and understand her inconceivable condition embroil her with the dangerous forces threatening her homeland. Protected by nothing more than her imagination and ingenuity, you'll never find a superhero more like you.

The first book in the Powerless series is the tale of Mira’s turbulent and perilous entry into the world around her. And once she’s a part of it, nothing will ever be the same again.

The story is already raking in the awards. It's won the Webb Weaver 2010 Writer's Competition, the judges proclaiming they were "entranced by the writer's ability to bring together this unlikely group of kids," and that the book could "be a hit in the YA book world." The story is a roller coaster ride, filled with diverse characters, lots to discover in an ever-expanding world, and a story full of hopes and aspirations. If you like stories with plenty of dramatic twists and spirited intensity, it'll have you falling in love with a brand new series and begging for more!"
(Goodreads)

Review

The Synthesis, Book one of the Powerless series, tells a coming of age story of Mira Ipswitch, a fifteen year-old who comes into terms of her uniqueness as she struggles to fit in to a society where everyone else has powers - except her.

Mira was sheltered in the Cloud Cottage by her parents, afraid that she might be considered as an outcast by their society for having no special abilities or powers.  Her father, uses his power to cloak their surroundings with mist and protect her from the outside world.  Her mother, with the power to make a person asleep is her usual companion in their house.  Although given all the things she could need and ask for in her life, Mira finds herself questioning what lies behind the mist and why can't she go out.

As she is given the freedom to go outside and go to school, she realized that fitting in may not be exactly easy, and what does that mean for her being in a society where she is the only one powerless?  Against odds with other students with special abilities, Mira uses her wits and skills like that of in machinery to beat the challenges and to prove to others that she is her own ability.  And with the upcoming war between Light and Dark, where does that put Mira?

This is a promising first novel from Jason Letts.  The roles are reversed, where the protagonist finds herself with no special powers but is ordinary in a world where everyone is given a kind power as gift at birth.  The way Mira struggles with her peers will remind you of the reality of a teenager encountering peer pressure while trying to forge her identity.

I give this novel props for imagination and giving the characters a relatable identities, which most teenagers can connect with.  Some readers may or may not find this as good as the others.  But I know fantasy lovers can agree that this one is pretty interesting.  In the beginning I was a bit lost at the writing style but once I get passed that, I was able to enjoy the experience and was glad I was able to read the book.

Now I am just glad that the second book in the Powerless series, The Shadowing, is now out.  Definitely will have to read this one.  Because there is more to Mira, the secrets in the past, and her role in the coming war - a war where each of them will need to prepare.

10 Reasons why I [heart] Hush, Hush

So in my anticipation of Crescendo, the sequel to Hush Hush, I decided to make a list of some of my reasons why I'm in-love with the book.  Don't worry for those who haven't read it, my list won't spoil anything.  And hopefully will get you to be interested to read it. :)

1.  Story
It's the kind of story that grows on you.  At first I was lost but eventually it sank on me and well, never left me.  It was the first story about fallen angels that I have encountered and I loved it!  And the mystery and the tension is just right to make you want more.

2. Becca Fitzpatrick
Becca is really nice.  I haven't had the chance to meet her in person (global positioning problem) but starting from the interaction in the forum, chats, blog and tweets I can say she is.  She really did a fantastic job in writing Hush, Hush.  It's no wonder there's Crescendo and a third one, Tempest.  Because she clearly deserve to share her writing to the world, and her work is loved.

3. Fanbase (fellow Nephilims)
After I got hooked with Hush, Hush I stumbled upon FallenArchangel and its forum where I met some awesome fellow Nephilims.  It's where I first discovered some of the books that I've fallen in-love with after Hush, Hush, and was introduced to other forums such as MundieMoms.  The admins, Jenn and Rebecca are awesome in what they've started and still doing for the fans.

4. Book Covers
Aaahh...the book covers!  the first one was awesome! I think no one will disagree with me on that.  James Porto did a fantastic job on it.  As a fellow Nephilim once said, "boys without shirts on the cover is love." lol.  And Crescendo's cover is as captivating it makes you want to pick up the book too even without any shirtless guys on. lol.

5. Nora
Nora is no love-at-first-sight girl.  She's critical and has clear ideas on what she wants and probably how to get there.  That is until she met Patch. :p  She can be kick-ass too and I love it when despite feeling afraid, she tries to overcome it.

6. Patch - bringing sexy back
Patch can set the pages on fire.  I was unaware I was fanning myself as I was reading the book when he's on it with Nora.  No wonder Nora feels a bit thrown-off with Patch.  The looks are just tip of the iceberg with Patch.

7. Feisty best friend and an Irish mate
Vee is such a wonderful character! I love her.  She's funny and the right kind of fun that complement with that of Nora's criticalness.  What better way to deal with a school-bitch than having a fiesty best-friend with you.

Then there's Rixon!  Although he has little exposure in the book, I really adore him!  Aside from being Irish and a fellow fallen angel, Patch finds a friend in him and he seems to be a very interesting character too.  I hope we get to see more of him.  And what's a badass got to do without a partner-in-crime? :p

9.  Mystery baddie
Patch is supposedly bad -  very bad for Nora.  But it turns out that there are others who have plans for her.

10. Team Angels
There was no question after reading Hush, Hush that I am on Team Angels.  The take-on the fallen angels are refreshing, so to say the least.

I think after reading Hush, Hush my book numbers went up to like 90% in less than 2 months.  Crazy but true.  Looking back it's really a wonder the events that led me to reading again with a little help from some angels, awesome authors, and fellow readers.

Waiting on Wednesday: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Nightshade (Nightshade, #1)
by Andrea Cremer
October 19, 2010

"Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?" (Goodreads)

Aside from Crescendo, I'm also anxiously waiting for Nightshade by Andrea Cremer! :) I've been hearing a lot of positive raves about this book and I'm mighty interested about the plot too!  And the cover reminds me of "Final Fantasy," which is pretty cool!  Definitely also worth waiting! :)

Bits of This And That: Book Covers, Brightly Woven Fan, and COFA Cover Contest

The sequel to Rebecca Maziel's Infinite Days now has a cover! Stolen Nights (Vampire Queen, #2) is slated for release next year March 15.

I am yet to start reading, Infinite Days, but I've been hearing good things about it.  I'm excited to read this and hopefully I can include it in my reads during my scheduled hiatus.

And we also have news of a new anthology from Trisha Telep (Kiss Me Deadly and Eternal Kiss).  The new anthology is called, Corsets & Clockwork: 14 Steampunk Romances.  With the sudden familiarity with steampunk, thanks to Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel, Scott Westefeld's Leviathan, and the likes.

Tuesday Trailer: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Becca Fitzpatrick
October 13 2009
"For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life." (Goodreads)
I love, love, love this book!  This is what brought me back to reading again!  At first I thought it was ok..then it seeped into your consciousness.  It's like Patch getting into your brain and messing with your thoughts.  Then suddenly you find yourself pulled back into reading it again and realize that you're in-love with it? Read my review of Hush, Hush.

Becca just did an amazing job at it!  Patch was a-ma-zing-ly hot!  It was storm season when I read it but Patch just warmed just enough not to need a jacket.  She and the guys at Fallen Archangel rocks!  Fans there just screaming Team Angel and We Want More Patch!

Just a few more days before Crescendo let's see again the book trailer for the book that started it:
