A fresh, urban twist on the classic tale of star-crossed lovers.
When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.
Review
Imagine Patch (Hush, Hush) human and mexican. Then you'll have Alex Fuentes. All tatooed and a certified member of the friendly neighborhood gang, he is definitely a bad boy you wouldn't want your daughter to be inviting for dinner. But underneath that facade, lies another Alex Fuentes that you'll definitely fall in-love with.
Brittany Ellis is your typical little miss perfect: rich, blonde, blue eyes, cheerleader with the grades to boot. She has the football captain as her boyfriend, and equally rich, beautiful, and popular friends as well. But not everything is perfect in Britanny's life, that is why she has to keep up with pretending to have one.
Both of them were doing equally fine until they ended up as chemistry lab partners. Everyone knows that northern and southern people don't mix because it would be a catastrophe. But something unexpected happened between Alex and Brittany. They fell in-love.
Simon Elkeles wrote a relevant and powerful story about how differences can be bridged by love, friendship, acceptance, and family. I don't normally read contemporary fiction, but I'm more than glad I made the decision to read this book. How the love story between Alex and Britanny developed is beautiful and not just an overnight thing. Their characters are complex but not that difficult to relate with as well. Even if you are not a gangster or a popular student, there is something in each of the characters that you'll be able to relate with.

Len spends most of her time ruminating on her writings that never made it to paper; keeps sane by reading books and listening to music. She reviews most of them out of love and the joy of it.
