Review: Crusade by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie

Crusade

"For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain’s Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun.
Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated — and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose.
Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself — and her heart." (Goodreads)

Review
"It is a crusade, at least for most of us.  A holy cause.
We are dedicated to it  We will give our lives for it.
We fight with the idealism of the young and struggle with the emotions and confusions of growing up at the same time.  For us love and hatred can spin into life or death, especially for me, Jenn Leitner.

And for some of us, death can never come.  Which means this war can rage on...
... forever.

- from the diary of Jenn Leitner"

A take on the future, where the vampires stopped existing in the shadows and have come out to claim their share of the earth.  Only, they seem to plan not to share it equally with humans.

Jenn Leitner is one of the graduates of Spain's Sacred Heart Academy, and a member of an elite hunting team - the first in the history of the school.  Together with the other "graduates" of her batch, they make up the team that swore to protect humans and eliminate the threat of vampires.  But all is not what it seems within the team, that seems to walking within the edge of self-destruction. The members' clash with each other and had that unspoken mistrust with each other.

This is a dark and thrilling look on vampires and humans.  You think vampires and you think romance.  Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie bring you back to the dark side of Vampires and humans in a time where survival is at stake.  Hope is bleak when almost everyone give in to fear, and only a few dares to do otherwise.

The struggle within the group makes you wonder if their loathing for vampires the only thing keeping them together, or there is more?  And each of the hunters back story adds intrigue to the novel.

I recommend reading first Nancy and Debbie's short story, Passing, found in The Eternal Kiss: 13 Vampire Tales of Blood and Desire.  It's a nice prologue to this novel and will give you a look in how the team of hunters came to be and their personalities as well.

If you like vampires old school and is craving for a dark tone in your stories, then Crusade should be on your list.

I love mythology - the gods and goddesses and everything in between.  I find them fascinating.  That's why when I find books that tackle retelling of mythological characters and see that their take on it is interesting, it's sure to end up on my tbr list.  Like this one!

This sounds interesting take on a mythological character and not just character but the god of the underworld, Hades! I'm hoping that this one is as good as it sounds.  :)

Music Monday: Better than Today by Kylie Minogue

She's back now stronger than ever after battling with breast cancer.  Kylie Minogue is one of the women artists that I love because she's strong and confident in carrying herself.

Before her breakout single, Spinning Around, she had note-worthy songs as well.  And her music videos never disappoint.  They're always a visual feast to match her catchy tunes.

This is now a staple in my playlist to start my day and as I work.  Something to remind me of enjoying the excitement of life, and taking risks every now and then.  As they say, "no guts no glory", and the infamous, "seize the day"!  Life is too short to be wasted in the past.  Live for today.  Tomorrow will be better!

Lady Gaga in Vogue (March ed)

From being teased for having a rabbit teeth to landing the cover of Vogue.

On newsstands February 22, 2011

Lady Gaga tweets, “they used to call me rabbit teeth in school, and now I’m a real live VOGUE BEAUTY QUEEN!”

“I want for people in the universe, my fans and otherwise, to essentially use me as an escape. I am the jester to the kingdom. I am the route out. I am the excuse to explore your identity. To be exactly who you are and to feel unafraid. To not judge yourself, to not hate yourself.”Lady Gaga in the March issue of Vogue

I'm a fan of Lady Gaga - she's unique, strong, and still humble in her way.  She's graceful amidst all the eccentric facade and she can really sing.  The girl's got talent and she uses her fame to fight for the rights of others.  She's my lady bono.

Cover Reveal: Supernaturally by Kiersten White

The cover of Supernaturally, the sequel of Paranormalcy by Kiersten White revealed!

"Life's never fair when faeries are involved."

WOW!  HOT!  Now gorgeous is an understatement for this one.  The girl on the cover (Evie) is exuding, "I'm something paranormal."

Let's look at the book cover in all it's entirety:

Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables

"No. Don't give up hope just yet. It's the last thing to go. When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope."
- I am Number Four (Pittacus Lore)

----------------------

Hope is a powerful thing next to love, for me.  And the closest thing to both love and faith.  As the quote says, when everything is lost, all you have to hold on to is hope.  Sometimes it's enough to give you strength and courage.

The movie adaptation of I am Number Four is now out in the theaters!  I can't wait to see the movie.   I have read the book and really enjoyed it.  I know some people have mixed reactions towards the book and I'm cool with that.  It's just that I notice a few who decides to judge the book because of the intrigue that haunts the author/s.  For me, I had to set aside prejudice for the author/s and just really see the story as it is.  It's really creative and has an interesting plot.  Worth the shot and what's to lose if you have Alex on the cover of the movie tie-in book? :)

"For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant"
(Goodreads)

Review

Janie feels she has a wrecked of a life.  Her mother is always wasted, she had to fend for herself, and she has to struggle with school.  And oh, she falls asleep but doesn't dream her own but gets sucked into someone else's dream, which makes things a lot difficult for her.  When she thought it can't get anymore worse - it did.

In this coming of age story infused with Criminal Minds meets something paranormal.  The character of Janie is strong and willed, but is seriously freaked out by her abilities.  She has no idea why she has it and what to do with it.  Then she meets Cabel, a school mate who transformed himself from a nobody to someone people in the school now notices.  And he notices Janie and appears to be interested.  But Janie knows he's hiding something.  Because she saw something in his dreams that is different from all the dreams she had.

The way Wake is written might put people off so it will take some getting used to.  The sentences can be chopped and the flow of the story can go back and forth depending on "waking" or dream" moments.  But when you get the hang of it, you'll find yourself drawn to the story especially on how the relationship between Janie and Cabel develops.

The first book marks the uncovering of the potential of Janie's ability, putting direction in her life, and laying the foundation for what to come for her and Cabel.  The story continues on Fade

"An elite group of nerds fight injustices by running a clandestine operation in high school. The C.Y.A., a.k.a. Covert Youth Agency, hacked into the digital school sign and posted their message: - - - If ever you're in need of help and you have nowhere else to go, seek out the C.Y.A. We're always watching and we're here for you - - - Peter "Pi" Samuels, a fourteen-year-old sophomore, runs the shadow operation. Pi's obsessed with the high school band's lead violinist, who's as beautiful as the music she plays. When she contacts the C.Y.A. to find out if her boyfriend cheated on her at a party, Pi's objective becomes clear. Prove that her beau was unfaithful. Then maybe Pi will be the perfect shoulder to cry on. Pi schemes to destroy his love's boy-toy, all while avoiding a deranged coach bent on exposing an untraceable geek squad for hire. The Covert Youth Agency." (Goodreads)

Review

In this debut YA novel by Jason Ancona, CYA stands for Covert Youth Agency, a group of young high school students who stealthily use their skills to help those who are in need in their school.  They are the "nerds" among the social crowd.  Pi, the narrator most of the time in the story and the "leader" of the group. Together with Tollhouse, the field agent, and Lightman, group's resident computer scientist.

So what's up with the group?  Their latest case just happens to be about a girl named Vera, Pi's super crush.  This is where the case of tangled love enters.   Love makes us do crazy things and in this case hilarious stuffs ensues.

This is a short read that reminded me of the time I'm watching those teen shows in Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.  Where teens have their own world in school, and CYA is like a semi-vigilate group of sort.  I love the dynamics in the friendship between Pi, Tollhouse and Lightman.  Their funny banters and put up with each other.

Middle-grade readers will be more likely to relate with the story and have fun reading this.  It''s just a fairly short read and it may be a bit drag at first but as soon as it picks up, it's a enjoyable read.

"For Teagan, these last few months have been heaven on earth- especially now that Garreth, her boyfriend and guardian angel, is earthbound. But perhaps Garreth is becoming a little more human than either of them expected.

Now, Teagan must realize that her world is once again about to shift, as she questions the faith she held in others against those once considered enemies.

In this continuation of Angel Star, Lemniscate will draw you even deeper into the world of dark and light as Teagan realizes the angel who could possibly save them all is the one angel she feared the most." (Goodreads)

_______________________

Lemniscate is another term for the infinity symbol.  Derived from the latin word lemniscus, which means "ribbon".  So that's a bit on the symbol, which is rooted in math (and we do not want to go there aside from not related, i really don't want to).

If you have read the first book, Angel Star (you can read my review of it here and the book trailer here), you'll probably have an idea that symbols play a part in Jennifer Murgia's story.  With this one symbolizing infinity, where could it fit...hmm...

I loved the first book and I can't wait to read this one soon.  There's a certain angel I'm looking forward to meeting again... :D

Tueday Trailer: X-Men First Class and some The Hobbit news

I've always been a fan of X-Men.  I remember watching the animated series when I was young.  But damn, my local channel for not playing it in order and abruptly just stopped airing them.  Oh well.

In this new attempt for the X-Men franchise, we go back to the time when Professor X and Magneto are still young and comrades.  I think they were really good friends with differing ideologies.

James McAvoy is a serious eye-candy here.  I always see Magneto with the aura of Sir Ian McKellen but we'll see what he brings to the character.  New/Old characters are also something to look forward to here.

Going to The Hobbit news, a picture of Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins, with the dwarves are released after the movie's launch presscon in New Zealand.

Ah, Martin Freeman looks so cute!  He will surely make a good hobbit.  And there are hot-looking dwarves in the bunch.

Director Peter Jackson was not able to attend the event due to a health-induced house arrest after last month's hospitalization due to perforated ulcer.

You can watch an interesting video of the cast during the event at Stuff (NZ).  Shooting starts on March 21 in New Zealand.

Clockwork Prince February Teaser

Cassie is really the best.  She treated us with an early Valentine's gift with this Clockwork Prince teaser.  This is actually a part of a bargain when she asked her twitter followers and TMI fans to give her a break from all the Alex Pettyfer/movie/casting questions.

We should let Cassie breathe once in a while with or without a cookie. :D

"What desperation drove you to me, in the middle of the night, in a rainstorm? What has changed at the Institute? I can only think of one thing..."

"They slowed finally at the southeastern corner of the church. Watery daylight poured through the rose windows overhead. “I know we are in a hurry to get to the Council meeting,” said Jem. “But I wanted you to see this.” He gestured around them. “Poet’s Corner.”
Tessa had read of the place, of course, where the great poets and writers of England were buried. There was the gray stone tomb of Chaucer, with its canopy, and other familiar names: Edmund Spenser, who had written The Faerie Queen, “Oh, and Milton,” she gasped, “and Coleridge, and Robert Burns, and Shakespeare —”
“He isn’t really buried here,” said Jem, quickly. “It’s just a monument.”
“Oh, I know, but —” She looked at him, and felt herself flush. “I can’t explain it. It’s like being among friends, being among these names. Silly, I know . . .”
“Not silly at all.”
She smiled at him. “How did you know just what I’d want to see?”

“How could I not?” he said. “When I think of you, and you are not there, I see you in my mind’s eye always with a book in your hand.” He looked away from her as he said it, but not before she caught the slight flush on his cheekbones. He was so pale, he could never hide even the least blush, she thought — and was surprised how affectionate the thought was.

She had become very fond of Jem over the past fortnight; Will had been studiously avoiding her, Charlotte and Henry were caught up in issues of Clave and Council and the running of the Institute —even Jessamine seemed preoccupied. But Jem was always there. He seemed to take his role as her guide to London seriously: they had been to Hyde Park and Kew Gardens, the National Gallery and the British Museum, the Tower of London and Traitor’s Gate. They gone to see the cows being milked in St James Park, the fruit and vegetable sellers in Covent Garden, had watched the boats sailing on the sun-sparked Thames from the Embankment. And as the days went on, Tessa felt herself unfolding slowly out of her quiet, huddled unhappiness over Nate and Will and the loss of her old life, like a flower climbing out of frozen ground. She had even found herself laughing. And she had Jem to thank for it.

“You are a good friend,” she exclaimed, and when, to her surprise, he said nothing to that, she said, “At least, I hope we are good friends. You do think so too, don’t you, Jem?”

He turned to look at her."

Seriously, Jem.  I love you.

In Ixion music and party are our only beliefs. Darkness is our comfort. We have few rules but they are absolute . . .

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom.

But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him. Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother.

When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion?

Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly. Will friendship, and the creation of an eternal bond with a Riper, be enough to save her from the darkness?

Listen well, baby bats. Burn bright, but do not stray from the paths. Remember, when you live in a place of darkness you also live with creatures of the dark." (Goodreads)

"Emily Webb is a geek. And she’s happy that way. Content hiding under hoodies and curling up to watch old horror flicks, she’s never been the kind of girl who sneaks out for midnight parties. And she’s definitely not the kind of girl who starts fights or flirts with other girls’ boyfriends. Until one night Emily finds herself doing exactly that . . . the same night one of her classmates—also named Emily—is found mysteriously murdered.

The thing is, Emily doesn’t know why she’s doing any of this. By day, she’s the same old boring Emily, but by night, she turns into a thrill seeker. With every nightfall, Emily gets wilder until it’s no longer just her personality that changes. Her body can do things it never could before: Emily is now strong, fast, and utterly fearless. And soon Emily realizes that she’s not just coming out of her shell . . . there’s something much bigger going on. Is she bewitched by the soul of the other, murdered Emily? Or is Emily Webb becoming something else entirely— something not human?

As Emily hunts for answers, she finds out that she’s not the only one this is happening to—some of her classmates are changing as well. Who is turning these teens into monsters—and how many people will they kill to get what they want?" (Goodreads)

Bits of This And That: Blur, blur, blur!

I've been out too long!  I'm still trying to update myself of what's happening around the blogosphere and been tumblring for sanity's sake.  Most of the time things are just blur, blur, blur.  The only things that keeping me sane are well...pictures of Colin Morgan, Alex Pettyfer, and Benedict Cumberbatch on my dash.  Ridiculous but it helps! :D

Mr. Alex Pettyfer or Jace Pettyfer
First, most of the buzzzzzzzz that came a long way from I guess more than a week ago was the news of Alex Pettyfer being offered the role of Jace Wayland in the movie adaptation of Cassandra Clare's City of Bones.  It has ballooned to a growing and outspoken movement to have his gorgeousness take on the role.  But so far, NOTHING has been final yet.  And recent reports have seriously played the fans.  From tweaking the page of Alex Pettyfer in Wikipedia and IMDB, movie page for City of Bones putting him in the cast to heartbreaking rejection because of the news that Alex Pettyfer have opted to go for the role of Thomas Ward from The Last Apprentice.  Seriously, it's not nice to play with the fans especially when they're going mental.

Cassandra Clare has tried to calm the fans stating that if there is something OFFICIAL, she will announce it.  But that hasn't deterred her fans from asking her countless questions on AP and movie casting.  It's kind of annoying really but can't blame the fans. They know what they want and they are determined to make themselves heard.  Just keep it tight, loveys.  I myself am rooting for AP for the role, but we fight with dignity and ardor!

The fabulous Mundie Moms have a nice article on AP and casting.  So for now, we keep calm and wait for official news.  And remember that February 18 will be the release of the movie adaptation of I am Number Four with Alex Pettyfer.  Hey, maybe if the market sale of the movie is more than the producers expect casting gods will finally give us something to sing about. :D

And if you don't feel someone that other fans are suggesting for the part of Jace, please don't be mean.  Cassie has received news that there have been tweets to Douglas Booth expressing their negativity on having him nominated as Jace.  Let's keep the bashing within ourselves, loveys.  Let's not be rude.  Again, we fight with dignity and ardor!  And besides, he ain't that bad.  I mean, he's better than Charlie Bewley (sorry, CB fans. Ha!).  He can also play as Sebastian!  Though I see him more as Will Herondale.  Just color the hair, make eyes of blue.  Right? :)

If you are excited about the release of City of Fallen Angels, you will be excited also to know that the audiobook for COFA will feature the voices of - hold on - Ed Westwick and Molly Quinn!   I'm speechless!  COFA audiobook, you're on my list!

In other news, Becca Fitzpatrick has revealed the new title for the third book of the Hush Hush series.
